Assessment and Needs Analysis
Typically, through management interactions with and informal assessments of employees, it is likely that general indications as to the need for certain applications, such as training, can be observed, and assumptions can be made as to the type of interventions that would be most appropriate. Simply applying or initiating training under these premises often generates minimal impact and only short-term, if any, results in behavioral modification.
Implementing training without first obtaining a thorough understanding of the needs that exist is ill-advised; and, implementation of unsubstantiated training measures could lead to outcomes that are less desirable than the conditions that prevailed prior to any action being taken.
The first step that should be taken to ensure that training and performance improvement efforts are effective, and that the desired results are achieved, is to conduct an analysis that will provide a logical, practical and meaningful method for determining the skills, knowledge and/or abilities that require attention. This can significantly help in preventing the application of training interventions in situations where they are inappropriate or not needed. Conversely, analysis can also serve to uncover areas where unforeseen gaps and shortfalls may exist.
Once suspected needs are verified and those that had gone unrecognized are revealed, the training programs can then be customized to address those areas directly. Time, energy and expense are reduced because the training efforts and other developmental initiatives are concentrated solely on those things that can make a difference in performance.
